Zero, three, six, twelve, up to twenty milligrams: the scale printed on British bottles looks like a list of numbers with no instructions attached. Plenty of pages will happily tell you which one to pick. This one will not, because nicotine strength does not mean anything on its own. The same figure behaves completely differently depending on the hardware vaporising it, and understanding why is more useful than any chart. What follows explains what the number measures and how to calculate the one your own mix will produce.

What nicotine strength actually measures

The figure on a British bottle is a concentration, expressed in milligrams of nicotine per millilitre of liquid. A 10 ml bottle at 6 mg/ml holds 60 mg in total. That is all the number says.

What it does not say is how much of that reaches you, and that is the gap almost every chart glosses over. Concentration describes the liquid. It says nothing whatsoever about the quantity vaporised on a draw.

British shelves carry 0, 3, 6, 10, 12, 18 and 20 mg/ml, with 20 as the legal ceiling for anything sold containing nicotine. That ceiling is a regulatory fact about what may be placed on the market, not a target and not a scale to work up.

Why vapour volume changes everything

This is the parameter fixed correspondence charts leave out, and it is the reason they mislead. What arrives on a draw depends on the concentration multiplied by the volume of liquid vaporised, not on the concentration alone.

A sub ohm tank at 60 watts consumes liquid at a rate a small pod never approaches. At an identical figure on the label, it therefore delivers far more nicotine per draw, simply because there is far more liquid involved.

That is the technical reason British sub ohm liquids sit at the low end of the scale while pod liquids sit at the high end. It is not a preference or a convention, it is arithmetic: the two variables move in opposite directions to land in a comparable place.

Which means the useful question is never what figure is right, but what the combination of figure and hardware produces. A number that suits one setup is a different proposition entirely on another.

Nicotine strength and the draw style

Draw style is the second half of the same equation, and it is tied to the hardware rather than separate from it. Tight mouth to lung and open direct lung are not two ways of using the same device.

A tight draw at low power pulls a small volume of vapour into a concentrated sensation. The liquid consumed per draw is minimal, which is why the British pod market is built around the top of the scale.

An open draw at high power moves a large volume of air and vaporises far more liquid. The concentration comes down accordingly, and the vapour volume does the rest. On these setups, high figures also produce a throat sensation most people find unworkable.

Between the two sits everything else: refillable tanks at moderate power, restricted direct lung, and the broad middle of the British market. None of these have a correct figure attached to them, only a mechanism that determines what a given figure will do.

Calculating the nicotine strength of a mixed shortfill

Where this becomes concrete is the shortfill, because there you are setting the figure yourself rather than reading one off a label. The calculation is short and there is no ambiguity in it.

Every 10 ml nicotine shot adds both nicotine and volume. A freebase shot at 18 mg/ml brings 180 mg, a nic salt shot at 20 mg/ml brings 200 mg, and both add 10 ml to the bottle. The result is: strength equals total nicotine divided by total volume.

So a 50 ml shortfill with one 18 mg/ml shot gives 180 mg across 60 ml, which is 3 mg/ml. A 100 ml shortfill in its 120 ml bottle with two of the same shots gives 360 mg across 120 ml, also 3 mg/ml. The bottle sizes were designed around that arithmetic.

Why ready made charts mislead

A great many British pages publish a grid that assigns a figure to a profile. The approach has one structural flaw that no amount of detail fixes: it ignores the hardware.

Two people with comparable habits will not produce comparable results if one is using a compact pod and the other a large sub ohm atomiser. The vapour volume alone changes what a given concentration delivers, by a wide margin.

Those grids also tend to phrase themselves as advice, which is exactly what a page cannot responsibly offer about a substance that creates dependence. Describing the mechanism is useful. Handing out a number is not.

Reason from the hardware and the arithmetic instead, and the chart becomes unnecessary. You end up knowing what your own combination produces, which no grid can tell you.

Adjusting in steps rather than jumps

Whatever figure a bottle carries, changing it is worth doing one increment at a time. The scale exists in steps for a reason and skipping several of them tells you nothing useful.

Moving from 12 to 6 mg/ml on unchanged hardware isolates a single variable, so whatever changes can be attributed to it. Changing the figure, the wattage and the coil at once leaves you with no information at all.

Nicotine strength is a property of the liquid, not of the experience. It becomes meaningful only when it is set against the hardware vaporising it, because the vapour volume decides what a concentration actually delivers.
